Good news for the sole: Contrary to popular wisdom, people can get the same health benefits from walking 7000 steps a day as they do from walking 10,000 paces, according to a comprehensive review and meta-analysis published in The Lancet Public Health.

Sweetener intake, including aspartame and sucralose, was associated with an increased risk for early puberty in children, particularly in those who were genetically predisposed. Sex-specific effects were noted, with sucralose showing a stronger association with early puberty in boys and glycyrrhizin, sucralose, and other sugars in girls.

The COSMOS study was a large, randomized, double-blind study done to settle the issue once and for all. Sure, it was funded by the chocolate industry, and it tested a cocoa bean extract rather than the type of chocolate you buy at the store, but close enough, I guess. Anyway, it was negative. No cardiovascular benefits, no cognitive benefits, completely without merit or justification. Darn!!

Child ingested nicotine pouches are up 700% in the last four years.  Keep you nicotine pouches put away as if they were a medicine or a narcotic.  It either shows we are careless with our pouches or so many more people are using these sources of nicotine. Either way, it is avoidable. Please be careful.

Here we are, over half way through the year.  Hard to believe!

Newsworthy:  California is now requiring student ID's to have a 988 # on the back which is a suicide hotline.  Sad that it is necessary, but really glad to see it.

Do tattoos cause cancer?  The facts are still up in the air.  It makes sense that a lot of the chemical, cadmium etc are foreign to the body, but do they actually create cancer?  Studies are still not conclusive, but before you get a tattoo or another tattoo, do your diligence and know what you are doing.

Brain Implant Milestone-  For the first time, a brain implant has allowed a man to speak instantaneously and expressively, and even sing, a new study has revealed.  The finding marks a significant advancement in brain-to-text systems.  The patient has ALS, Lou Gehrigs' Disease, a neurodegenerative disease impacting his speech.  This occurred at UC Davis Med Center.  The name of the system is BrainGate2.  This advancement may pave the way for natural conversation.  Great job UC Davis!!

Are Your Spices Messing With Your Meds?  Of course.  Life is never so simple.

Here are two spices that can interact with your daily meds.

Curcumin, turmeric, interacts with the liver enzymes and may affect antidepressants, antihypertensives, chemotherapeutic agents, and certain antibiotics.  It's blood thinning, blood sugar loweering , and blood pressure reducing properties can affect the dosage of meds. At therapeutic concentrations, curcumin is contraindicated in gallstones, cholestasis, bleeding disorders or anticoagulants, and during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Ginger- its' active constituents, such as gingerol, have blood-thinning effects when consumed regularly, chronically, or in concentrated form and can increase bleeding risk when taken with anticoagulants. Higher doses can cause gastrointestinal side effects such as mucosal irritation, bloating, and heartburn.

Beware Of Chatboxes-Reuters) Well-known AI chatbots can be configured to routinely answer health queries with false information that appears authoritative, complete with fake citations from real medical journals, Australian researchers have found.  Without better internal safeguards, widely used AI tools can be easily deployed to churn out dangerous health misinformation at high volumes, they warned in the Annals of Internal Medicine. “If a technology is vulnerable to misuse, malicious actors will inevitably attempt to exploit it - whether for financial gain or to cause harm,” said senior study author Ashley Hopkins of Flinders University College of Medicine and Public Health in Adelaide.

Lots of health news this month.  As always, things are changing rapidly.

Sedentary Behavior Tied To Cognitive Decline In Older Adults-Being sedentary is associated with a smaller brain volume, neurodegeneration and worsened cognitive performance.  Researchers followed patients over a 7-year period, 24 and 7, wearing wrist-worn accelerometers and were followed by MRI testing. The average sedentary time was 13 hours per day.  The take-away from the study was that even it you exercise 60 minutes per day, if the rest of the day is sedentary your risks increase for cognitive decline.  Stay active more than one hour per day.   **Medscape June 2025

More On Carbs:  Consumption of total carbs and carbs from fruits and vegetables raised the odds of healthy aging.  Refined carbs and starchy vegetables lowered these odds.  Studies suggest that these foods increase the chance of healthy aging by 6-37% as opposed to consuming refined carbs lessening life by 13%.  ** Helio, June 2025

Quit Smoking Now To Preserve Your Vision-Smoking affects every vessel in your body, including your eyes.  It can cause eye disease that leads to vision loss and blindness.  It affects your retina, the delicate light-sensitive tissue that lines the inside of your eyes.  It can also affect your lens which allows us to focus, and the macula which is the sensitive part of the eye that supplies sharp vision.  Another good reason to quit according to the FDA.

Become More Social-Scientists looked at the social habits of nearly 2000 people, which included going to parties, visiting friends, and attending church.  Staying social helps to build up nerve connections that can protect against dementia. Possibly volunteer?

People  who floss regularly are 22-44% less likely to have a stroke compared to those who do not floss.

Magnesium:  There has been a lot of buzz in the news about the benefits of Magnesium, especially as it relates to sleep.  Adding one more thing may not be the best idea.  And, all Magnesium are not created equal.  Number one, look at all the labels of your supplements as some cross over and are contained in one another.  It is not necessary to take 15 supplements to get the effect you are looking for.  Again, read your labels and talk to your HCP about what you actually need. There are lab tests for vitamin levels and let your HCP help you with that information.  We are all different as individuals thus requiring different supplemental support.

There is so much happening daily that is newsworthy, it is hard to keep up, but I will try!

March 12, 2025 –

Health officials are worried that measles cases in at least 12 states may be a harbinger of outbreaks of other preventable diseases, including polio, rubella, and mumps. Measles cases reached 222 as of March 6, including one confirmed death and another under investigation. The outbreak has put doctors on alert for other diseases that have been long under control by vaccination. “It really is a harbinger,” said Adam Ratner, MD, MPH, Director of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at NYU Langone and Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital, New York. “When we start to see a decrease in vaccination rates, measles outbreaks are the first thing you see, and often what follows are the other vaccine-preventable diseases.”

What is your vaccination status?  If you don't know, talk to you HCP, Health Care Provider.  There are blood tests to check the antibodies that hopefully you have.  If you don't, boosters are suggested.

5 Risk Factors At 50 Can Steal A Decade Of Life

Five classic risk factors for cardiovascular disease-high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes and smoking-at age 50 can reduce life expectancy by more than 10 years.  This is the conclusion of an international study led by German researchers and presented at the American College of Cardiology Scientific Sessions.         These five factors account for approximately 50% of the global burden of cardiovascular diseases.                 The findings, also published in the New England Journal of Medicine show that lifestyle changes and risk management in middle age can make a significant difference.  Lowering your blood pressure and quitting smoking have the most impact.                                                                                                                           Talk to your Health Care Provider to obtain further information so you can make changes sooner rather than later.

Good News For MEN and Women

Per Medscape, April 2025, any amount of moderate or vigorous incidental physical activity-non-exercise movements performed daily such as transportation, work, HOUSEWORK or other domestic activities- was associated with a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease related outcomes.  Important.

Good News For Egg Lovers

Recent research has debunked the idea that eggs significantly increase cholesterol levels per the Dieticians at Mayo Clinic.  Studies have found that the cholesterol in some foods such as eggs, don't have the impact on blood cholesterol levels as once believed.  Additionally, eggs are a rich source of essential nutrients such as protein, vitamin, and minerals which are beneficial to your diet.  Plus, eggs have 8 grams of protein each and hopefully the price of eggs will return to normal.

Personally I can't believe it is March.                                                                                                                         Don't forget to change your clocks on the 9th of March.

Lots to report this month but let's look at some simple items first.

9 minutes.  Time it takes to boost your mood with music according to the British Academy of Sound Therapy.

Counting your blessings boosts longevity.  Focusing on what you're grateful for two times a week could help you live longer, say researchers in JAMA Psychiatry.  In the study, women who scored highest on gratitude questionnaires had lower risks of premature death from any cause than their less grateful counterparts.  The authors in JAMA explain that an attitude of gratitude improves physical and mental health while improving social connection.

Suicide rates are down globally by 40% according to an analysis published in The Lancet Public Health.  In North America the rates are up 7%.  Men experienced more successful attempts, especially by firearms, but women attempted suicide more frequently.  In 2021 there were a combined 700,000 plus attempts globally, one occurring every 43 seconds.

Chinese robot manufacturer Unitree was demonstrating its' latest H1 robot at a lantern ceremony in the city of Taishan, Guangdong province, when one walked over to a crowd barrier and seemed to lunge at an elderly woman nearly headbutting her according to ScienceAlert.com. Are we sure we are ready for this?

Mean population BMI (Body Mass Index) declined between 2022 and 2023.  The most notable decline was noted in the South which aligned with the high GLP-1 dispensing. This was the first decline since 2013.The study findings revealed a slight decrease in mean population BMI in 2023 compared to the prior decade as reported in Healio Med Journal.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. CRC, is a frequent neoplasm in western countries, mainly due to diet and behavioral factors. There has been an upswing in patients under 45 years of age.  Early detection is the key and not ignoring signs if your bowel pattern changes.  In March, we will highlight CRC with the most recent information.

Drones-Probably not a surprise, but the drones on the east coast and sporadically other places in the country, were all approved by the FAA according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.  I don't think too many people are surprised, but it strikes me as odd that it was withheld from us.  The amount of people that were truly worried that it was aliens, foreign adversaries, etc was enormous and created a huge amount of consternation for people in this country.  Somehow it offends me.

Marijuana- The largest study re: the effect of marijuana on the brain concluded at the University of Colorado. One thousand students, ages 22-36 were studied with a criteria of using marijuana 1000 times in their lifetime or averaging 5-7 times per week.  The study proved that the area of the brain that affects our cognition, memory, attention and processing speed were affected.  The study revealed that 63% of heavy lifetime users exhibited reduced drain activity during a working memory task, while 68% of recent users also demonstrated a similar impact.  More studies are needed to determine how longs these effects last and the impact on different age groups  (Published by JAMA Network)

Heart Disease-It is still classified as the number one killer of people in the US.  Research shows that inactivity, hypertension, ultra-processed foods, and obesity all contribute to the statistics.  How much of this is a modifiable risk factor?  Most of it.  We know we shouldn't carry extra weight, we know we shouldn't shop on the inner aisles at the grocery store as it is a ultra-processed food haven, we know we should exercise,  etc.

Tobacco alternatives risky for stroke and smokeless alternatives are a risk for dying of a coronary event.         Pipes? Evidence shows a risk of dying from heart failure.  Information gathered from Medscape, January 2025.

Alarming News

It was reported in Medscape, January 2025 that there is an alarming rise in early onset cancer (EOC) in people under 50. There has been a 79% increase noted over the last three decades and the medical community is sounding the alarm.  It appears that there is a whole new generation of people that are more at risk than previous generations.

It is an immediate threat. Trying to screen people for cancer at a much earlier age, but even setting up these programs and having enough Health Care providers will take time. It also means that people may experience cancer for more years in their life, treatment costs, etc.

It is a concern that younger adults don't generally go to their Health Care Providers routinely until 30s-40s or later.

Is this environmental or lifestyle?  We only know one thing for sure, all this ultra-processed food, lack of exercise, excessive alcohol and stress are not good for us.

Take a stand!  Change your diet this year.  Let this be the year of your success and taking the steps toward a healthy lifestyle.

The Role of Vitamin D

We hear about it all the time, no, it's not good for you, yes it is.  Who do you believe/trust?

First, what is a vitamin?  A substance that is essential for normal human growth and nutrition.

We use Vit D to help us absorb calcium and phosphorus from the food we eat.  It is also part of our bodies ability to build up our immune system and build stronger bones. Is that why everyone seems so sick?

It is a very common problem to be low on Vitamin D and it is not helped by all the indoor "screens" we use every day instead of being outside. Those of us who have darker skin have more trouble absorbing the sun, thus Vit D.

Foods that are good sources of Vit D, salmon, rainbow trout, milk, yogurt, cheese, mushrooms, almonds and orange juice which if fortified with Vit D.

Vit D is tied into so many of our immune issues.  Ask your doctor about checking the levels on your next blood test.

One big step toward wellness.

Eight Ways To Stay Happy

Why not try these science back tips?

1. Embrace friendship

2.  Volunteer

3.  Connect with your ancestors

4  Write a list of all the good in your life

5.  Look forward to fun activities

6. Have a rest day once in a while, ie a pajama day

7. Avoid excessive caffeine, and certainly 8 hours before bedtime

8. The "E" word, exercise daily

Redundant to sure, but obviously important.

Challenge: Try it for one month and see how you feel.

It's Not Mental Health

A recent article in Helio notes that experts are attributing a rise in mass violence to "hate and anger".

Statistically violence accounted for 1% of homicides in 2023, .2% during 2000-2016 per the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.

January to August 2023, included 466 mass shootings, 545 deaths.

The reasons for all of this is not even fathomable  but researchers believe it is not generally mental health issues, just hate and anger.

We can do better than this.

Greetings and Happy Holidays.

Nothing like them.  I love the holidays, BUT a lot of work.

I am sure that most of us love them, but January 2nd is one of the most sacred days of the year.  Most of the cleanup is done and we start getting ready for spring.

Here is the Newsletter

*According to Medscape, sexually transmitted diseases are down for the first time in years.  Really good news for our families as it can wreak havoc on our bodies.

*Drugs That Affect Balance

  Antidepressants-SSRIs, SNRIs

  Anti-anxiety Meds-Benzodiazepines

Blood pressure Drugs-Diuretics, Calcium Channel blockers, and ARBS

  Diabetes Drugs-Insulin, Glucotrol, Glyburide, etc

  Heart Drugs-Beta Blockers, Nitrates

  Pain drugs-opiates, Neurontin

  Sleep Drugs-Ambien, etc

It does not mean that you stop taking without notifying  your doctor.  It means you work on

strengthening and balance  One of the best exercises for balance is standing on one foot, the other leg at

a 90 degree angle, start counting. Maybe you will get to 10, but the goal is to work up to 100 on both

sides.  It will take time, but it is a great exercise.  At first you will hold on to a counter lightly, one finger,

As we get older we need our balance more than ever.  But talk to your HCP about your meds.

*Microplastics-A Major Health Concern

I want to mention that decades ago, before the advent of plastic everything, I never saw all the cognitive

changes that we see in 2024.  Something is definitely going on.  It is not one thing causing all of this but

this is something we can work on.  Mexico is extremely environmentally friendly.  All milks are in

cardboard, one brings there bags for groceries, etc.

Microplastics have been found in the lungs, liver, heart, blood and brain.  The sizes range, but some are up

to 5 mm, the size of a pencil erases. Personally I find that very frightening, arteries are not that wide.

The Plastic Health Council has reported that more than 500 metric tons of plastic are produced worldwide         annually and those products contain more than 16,000 chemicals.  Approximately 1/4 of those                          chemicals have have been found hazardous to human health.

Other studies have found that these substances contribute to preterm birth , inflammation and probable

    antibiotic resistance.

Do your own research, but don't shrug this off.  One can clean out cupboards, throw out the plastic,

Tupperware, etc.  Find a glass or metal cup for your coffee.  Good bye to plastic dinner plates.  Work on this.

It has also been found in your carotid arteries.  I, for one, plan to clean out my kitchen.  Never microwave

in plastic as the plastic goes airborne and you inhale it.

We live in a pretty toxic world, but small changes that we make really can help.    Medscape, 12/2024

On World Brain Day, July 22 2024, the German Society of Neurology pointed out that too much sugar can harm the brain.

Of course the brain needs glucose, (sugar) but a permanent increase in blood sugar levels due to too much sugar, too lavish meals and constant snacking increase the  blood sugar levels. We are overloading the system and this fuels the development of many diseases, diabetes, dementia, etc.

The per capita consumption  of sugar was 33.2 kg, 72.75 lbs, in 2022, which is twice the recommended amount.  The German recommendation is no more than 10 per cent of calories in sugar.  If your calorie allotment is 2000 calories per day, approximately 50 grams of sugar per day.  It is important to read labels to understand sugar contents in food.

The mechanism:  high blood sugar damages brain blood vessels and promotes deposits on the vessel walls, thus reducing blood flow.

It is a challenge to reduce your sugar as even a small amount of sugar can trigger the gut to send signals to the brain.  But it is worth it as 40 per cent of dementia and 90 per cent of strokes are avoidable as many of them are linked to sugar.

So the next time you reach for a Three Musketeers bar, stop and think, is this worth it.  It contains 67 grams and a grande Frappuccino from Starbucks is 60 grams of sugar.

Remember, treats are just that, a treat,  not a staple.

WHAT IS BREAST CANCER?

Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant, cancer, cells form in the tissues of the breast.  There are many different types of breast cancer that can affect both women and men.

To determine the extent of an individuals breast cancer and if it has spread outside of the breast, the cancer is assigned a STAGE upon diagnosis.  The early detection of breast cancer through annual mammography and other breast exams is the best defense against receiving a late stage breast cancer diagnosis.  The earlier the cancer is detected, the greater the likelihood of a successful outcome

Prevalence:  In 2024 310,720 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the US as well as 56,500 new cases of noninvasive (in situ) breast cancer. There are currently over 4 million breast cancer survivors in the US.  An estimated 42, 250 US women will die from breast cancer in 2024.

EVERY 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the US.  Staggering statistics.

Facts:  Approximately 66 percent of breast cancer cases are dignosed at a local stage.  The 5 year survival rate for breast cancer diagnosed early is 99 percent.  This is something to really pay attention to, early detection!

Approximately 15% of women diagnosed have a family history of breast cancer.  Those with a first degree relative, mother, sister, daughter, diagnosed with breast cancer are twice as likely to develop breast cancer themselves.

Breast cancer death rates have slowly decreased since 1989.  This is partly due to early detection.

Breast cancer in men. All people are born with some breast tissue and cells, including men.  it is rare, but men do get breast cancer.  in 2024, 2800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the US.

To Live Longer, Get To Know Your Toes

I laughed out loud when I read a recent title in a  Medscape article. a trusted medical journal.

The subject, of course is flexibility.

I thought about it and quickly put my palms on the ground to make sure I was "in the club" so to say.

But, it makes sense.  Flexibility is a huge issue as we get older.

So, can you?

A recent study in Brazil studied 10,000 participants and there was no specific correlation to early death.  But, as they looked at fall risks, etc, they evaluated the ability to stand on one foot for 10 seconds and to be able to rise from a sitting position on the floor quickly.  Those two tests seem to be very important toward longevity, possibly an additional 7 years,

Your goal is to start working at these two tests.  Of course, you need to have strength to do this, walking and yoga will definitely help.  Maye it a morning routine, this test every morning.  It will take one minute, compared to 7 years.

Whooping Cough

Whooping Cough, aka Pertussis, has been around for thousands of years, the earliest case was in Paris in 1578.

It is a bacterial respiratory infection that needs to be treated with antibiotics.  The causative organism was discovered in 1906 and a vaccine was developed in the 1940s.

The word pertussis means a "violent cough" which is the hallmark of the disease via the NIH.

It is highly contagious.  It is on the rise and is returning to pre-pandemic trends according to the CDC.

Why?  We were isolating, wearing masks and generally taking every precaution possible when around others.

Symptoms:  begin like a common cold

                    fever

                    tired

                    runny nose

increasing cough that sounds like a "whoop" or a bark, severe enough cough to cause vomiting

                   difficulty breathing

symptoms can last a month or more

*affects children and adults, infants particularly at risk

Tests:           a nose or throat culture

Treatment:  Antibiotics! This is highly contagious.  Call your doctor for an appointment.

Rest, fluids, isolation, hot tea, but let your HCP direct your care as to other things that you need.

Symptoms can last over a month so keep close contact with your HCP and arrange follow up appointments.

Vaccines      Childhood vaccinations begin as infants and receive 5 vaccines by the age of 7.  Teens and adults receive the booster pertussis vaccine every 10 years.

*Information from NIH and CDC websites

RSV-

 Respiratory Syncytial Virus

A contagious virus that causes infections of the respiratory tract.

It generally lasts a week or two, unless you have complications such as pneumonia.  It is spread through respiratory droplets from the nose and throat when people cough or sneeze.  It can also be spread by shaking hands or sharing items like glasses, etc.

It is very common, most children have this by age 2.

It begins as a runny nose, fatigue, some trouble breathing, sore throat, headache and decreased appetite.

If it progresses to shortness of breath, high fever, a bluish tint to your skin and an increased cough,

/wheezing, call your doctor or go to the ER.

In children the symptoms can come on very rapidly or if a teen or adult has lung problems, ie asthma, etc,

There are tests to confirm RSV via a nasal swab at your doctors or ER in necessary.  They are fast, generally taking one hour.

Once confirmed your HCP, Health Care Provider will advise you re: care, decongestants, fluids, rest, isolation as much as possible.

Information gathered via NIH, CDC websites.

This will be a collage of short, pertinent articles to keep you informed.

AUGUST IS LUNG CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

It is important to recognize the impact it has on our society.
Lung cancer is obviously a cancer that spreads in the lungs when the tissues mutate. It is directly related to smoking, air pollution, radon, asbestos, etc.  It can happen to people who do not even smoke.
It is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide.
Unfortunately there are no early symptoms.  As it progresses a new cough appears, thus any new cough lasting over two weeks should be checked by your Health Care Provider.
Other symptoms include chest pain, coughing up blood, hoarseness, shortness of breath and wheezing.  Later symptoms include bone pain, headaches, weight loss without trying, decreased appetite and swelling in the face or neck.
Smoking is the most important risk factor.  As one ages, there is increased risk.  Don't fool yourself about smoking or be a denier.  It is unhealthy,
Women are at an increased risk over men.
Stop smoking!
If you have not been screened for lung cancer as a smoker or have a persistent cough, please make an appointment with your HCP, Health Care Provider.
Early detection is extremely important as there are hopeful treatments for this dreaded cancer.  Stage 1 lung cancer is localized to the lungs without metastasis, thus early screening and being aware of the listed symptoms is extremely important for survival.
One might ask about vaping. The long term effects of e-cigarettes are  not well-studied as they are relatively new.  It does make sense though that inhaling heated chemicals into the fragile tissues of the lungs does not make sense.

DANGEROUS NEW TREND

There is a dangerous new trend in sexual patterns that should be of concern to all.
It has emerged as a prevalent, often wanted and consensual sexual behavior according to the NIH.  The study was done involving women 18-30 years of age, who had been strangled during sex up to 4 times in the past 30 days during sex.
The feeling is that it increases sexual pleasure and lead to a euphoric feeling when oxygen supply is returned to the brain. It is part of a general trend of increased rough sex behaviors.
The obvious risk is going too far, cutting off the circulation too long and having a stroke.  Strangulation compresses the carotid arteries and the jugular veins.  It only takes minimal force to compress these vessels.
Studies also show that 58% of undergrad women reported a lifetime history of being choked and 34% had been had been choked over 5 times.
So sisters, mothers, grandmothers, friends, etc be aware of what women might share with you.  It is important to advocate safe sex and avoiding sexual violence.

RISKS RELATED TO DEMENTIA

Below is a list of modifiable behaviors with suggestions for change.
What can you modify?
*Air pollution-the most difficult to modify. Move?
*Depression-speak to your HCP, walk 3 times a week or more, reach out to
   family or friends.
*Excessive alcohol-women not over one 4 oz glass of wine per day, or one beer, or one ounce of alcohol.  Consider alcohol free days.  Men- the same.
*Head injury-hard to modify, but can follow some of the other tips.
*Hearing loss-hearing aids!  Important.  Your brain needs to process words.
*High cholesterol-talk to your doctor, modify diet, exercise, eat at home.

Of course we know the dangers of the weight gain, but the linkage to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc.  Typical examples of unhealthy processed foods:
    sugary beverages
deli meats, hot dogs and sausages
    frozen pizzas, frozen meals
packaged snacks such as chips, cookies, crackers and baked goods
    most breakfast cereals

It is everywhere.  Wean yourself away from all this FAKE FOOD.  We are all busy, but are we so busy we won't take the time to be healthy?
Many people say they never go to McDonalds, but I have seen them in AM/PM indulging on those 500 plus calorie snacks.  Same thing.
We are all getting older and it is never to late to make a change.
