March 12, 2025 – Health officials are worried that measles cases in at least 12 states may be a harbinger of outbreaks of other preventable diseases, including polio, rubella, and mumps. Measles cases reached 222 as of March 6, including one confirmed death and another under investigation. The outbreak has put doctors on alert for other diseases that have been long under control by vaccination. “It really is a harbinger,” said Adam Ratner, MD, MPH, director of pediatric infectious diseases at NYU Langone and Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital, New York. “When we start to see a decrease in vaccination rates, measles outbreaks are the first thing you see, and often what follows are the other vaccine-preventable diseases.”

5 Risk Factors At 50 Can Steal A Decade Of Life
Five classic risk factors for cardiovascular disease-high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes and smoking-at age 50 can reduce life expectancy by more than 10 years. This is the conclusion of an international study led by German researchers and presented at the American College of Cardiology Scientific Sessions. These five factors account for approximately 50% of the global burden of cardiovascular diseases. The findings, also published in the New England Journal of Medicine show that lifestyle changes and risk management in middle age can make a significant difference. Lowering your blood pressure and quitting smoking have the most impact. Talk to your Health Care Provider to obtain further information so you can make changes sooner rather than later.
