Adults with diabetes who are physically active on the weekends or who exercise regularly have a 21% and 17% lower risk for all-cause mortality, respectively, than people who are inactive. These benefits are mainly due to fewer deaths from heart related issues, with "weekend warriors" and regularly active participants showing 33% and 19% lower risk respectively.
What does this tell us? It tells us that sitting around causes our muscles to be lazy, our bones to be weak, and hearts to get soft and inefficient and our brains to get lazy.
August is Wellness Month, which means it is time to re-evaluate your level of fitness. I know I harp on this a lot, but unless you are Shirley McClaine, you only have one life. We need to think about this seriously. We have an opportunity to change or at least modify our future medically, at least lessen the effects of poor health.
Make an appointment with your doctor, request lab work, eye appointment referrals, colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy, dental exams and other age appropriate necessities. A simple screening annually can give you a wealth of information toward your future vitality.
